The Christmas Surprise I’ll Never Forget

There are some Christmas memories that stay with you forever.

Not because of the presents under the tree. or because of how much money was spent. And sometimes, not even because of the decorations themselves.

They stay with you because of how they made you feel.

I still remember being a little boy and coming home from school one day during the Christmas season. I opened the door, walked inside, and suddenly our house had been transformed.

Christmas was everywhere.

The decorations were up, the house felt completely different, and there was that unmistakable feeling that Christmas had arrived.

And my mom had done it all.

I can only imagine how much work went into that surprise. She worked incredibly hard to make our home feel magical for me and my brother. At the time, I was just a kid. I saw the finished product. I saw the lights, the decorations, the Christmas magic.

I didn't see the hours of work that came before it.

I didn't see her carrying boxes, unpacking decorations, arranging things just so, or making sure everything was ready before we came home.

I simply walked through the door and felt happy.

That's what makes this memory so special to me now.

As an adult, I understand what I didn't understand as a little boy: Christmas magic doesn't just happen. Someone creates it.

And sometimes, the people creating it are doing so simply because they love you.

My mom wasn't decorating for social media. She wasn't trying to create a picture-perfect home. She wasn't following a trend.

She was creating a Christmas memory for her children.

And she succeeded.

Decades later, I can still remember that feeling of walking through the door and realizing that Christmas had arrived.

It's funny how our perspective changes as we get older. When we're children, we experience the magic. When we're adults, we begin to understand the love behind it.

Now, when I decorate for Christmas, I think about that little boy coming home from school.

I think about my mom.

And I think about all the work she put into creating something that lasted far longer than the season itself.

The decorations eventually came down. The tree went away. The boxes were packed up and put back into the attic.

But the memory stayed.

That's the thing about Christmas.

We think we're decorating our homes, but really, we're decorating our memories.

We're creating little moments that our families and even our future selves may carry with us for years.

And maybe that's why I love Christmas so much.

Because I know what it feels like to walk through a door and feel that little spark of wonder.

I know what it feels like when someone has put in the work simply to make you happy.

And I know now that sometimes the greatest Christmas gifts aren't found underneath the tree.

Sometimes they're waiting for you when you walk through the front door.

And sometimes, it starts with someone you love making a little magic just for you.
